Ahmed AL-Mulla

Ahmed Al-Mulla is a Saudi poet and filmmaker, born in the Al-Ahsa Governorate in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1961. Since childhood, he had a keen interest in reading. During his university years, he penned his inaugural poetic piece, which contested a poem by Ghazi Al-Qusaibi. Around the age of 13, he experienced his first exposure to cinema, igniting a deep-seated passion for the art form.

Al-Mulla is considered one of the pioneers of the film industry in Saudi Arabia, having established and managed the Saudi Films Festival, which began its first edition in 2008. He served as the director of the Culture and Arts Association in Dammam for four years (from January 2014 to the end of December 2017).

Additionally, Ahmed Al-Mulla founded the Cinema Association in 2021. He also holds the position of advisor to the Chairman of the Board of the Arab Saudi Cultural and Arts Association since 2018. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Literary Club in the Eastern Province and served as the editor-in-chief of Al-Riyadi newspaper from 1997 to 2003.

Ahmed Al-Mulla: A Multifaceted Creative Journey

Ahmed Al-Mulla is also the head of the initiative for the National Film Archive Center in Saudi Arabia. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies from the College of Arts at King Saud University in 1982. He is also the director of the Poetry House Festival.

Among his notable collections are “Shadows Crumbling” in 1995, “Light and Inclined Like a Cassian” in 1997, “An Arrow Whispering My Name” in 2005, “Exercises of the Monster” in 2010, and “Our Girls Wrote” in 2013.

He has also published “A Marked Difference” and “The Air is Long and Short is the Earth” in 2014, “How Beautiful My Mistakes Are” in 2016, “A Hole the Size of Me” in 2017, “Hassan the Seventh” in 2017, “Beware of Dying Before You” in 2018, “Index of Destruction” and “It is About to Happen” in 2020.

In 2015, Ahmed Al-Mulla won the Mohammed Al-Thabeti Poet Award for Creativity in its second edition. He was also awarded the “Mohammed Al-Majid Award for Cinematic Creativity” shield by the family of the prominent Bahraini writer and journalist Mohammed Al-Majid during the Bahrain Film Festival 2023, in recognition of his long artistic career and influential contributions to the art scene.

Despite working in various artistic fields, Ahmed Al-Mulla prefers to be known as a poet. He has written for the theater, dabbled in photography, and acted in short films.
