The Doha Arabic Book Award has announced the opening of nominations through its official website for its inaugural cycle, “The First Edition,” starting from March 5th, 2024, until June 5th, 2024.

The prize will only accept nominations this year in the following academic disciplines:

  • Linguistic and Literary Studies: This edition is dedicated to linguistics and language jurisprudence.
  • Social and Philosophical Studies: This edition is dedicated to sociology and philosophy.
  • Historical Studies: This edition is dedicated to Arab and Islamic history from the first century until the end of the sixth Hijri century.
  • Jurisprudence and Islamic Studies: This edition is dedicated to the principles of jurisprudence, purposes, and jurisprudential rules.
  • Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, and Textual Criticism (In textual criticism, this edition is dedicated to the critical and literary heritage).

The prize emphasizes that it will not accept nominations outside these academic fields and specialties this year. There are two categories for the prize: the Individual Book category and the Achievement category. Nominations can be made in either category provided that the work falls within one of the academic fields announced by the prize each year.

The Individual Book category focuses on Arabic books whose topics fall within the announced academic fields of the prize, according to the category’s specific conditions. The Achievement category honors individuals and institutions with long-term intellectual projects, based on a body of work accomplished in one of the prize’s academic fields.

Nomination Criteria: Individual Book Category:

  • The book must be authored in Arabic and its subject must belong to one of the academic fields of the prize.
  • The book must have been published in print with an international deposit number within the last three years.
  • The word count must not be less than 30,000 words.
  • The author must adhere to scientific standards in methodology and documentation, and the book must contribute qualitatively to Arab culture.
  • The author must be alive at the time of nomination.
  • Nominations are accepted only from the author, and no other parties are eligible to nominate a book for another author.
  • An author cannot nominate more than one work, and simultaneous nominations in both the Individual Book and Achievement categories are not permitted.
  • Jointly authored books are accepted provided they are not the outcome of conferences and collective seminars, with the agreement of all contributors to the work.
  • The prize has the right to utilize the winning works and winners for the purpose of promoting and disseminating information about the prize.

To nominate in this category:

  • The electronic form on the official website must be completed exclusively, with all required documents attached.

Achievement Category:

  • Individuals or institutions aspiring to nominate for the prize must have made significant intellectual contributions enriching Arab culture with originality and authenticity, representing a substantial addition to knowledge and human culture.
  • Nominating publishing houses must adhere to intellectual property laws and regulations, and they must submit supporting files and documents along with the nomination form. Nominations are solely dependent on the nominees (individuals or institutions), and no nominations from others are accepted.
  • Simultaneous nominations in both the Achievement and Individual Book categories are not allowed.
  • The prize has the right to utilize the winning works and winners for the purpose of promoting and disseminating information about the prize.

  • The electronic form on the official website must be completed exclusively, with all required documents attached.
