The inaugural Film Criticism Conference, hosted by the Saudi Film Commission, will take place in Riyadh from November 7th to 12th.

he aim, as stated in the Ministry of Culture’s press release, is to introduce the art of film criticism to a broader audience and foster discussions among critics and film enthusiasts.

Named “Beyond the Frame,” the conference is a significant step in the Film Commission’s efforts to establish a cultural exchange platform for critics, academics, and cinephiles. CEO Eng. Abdullah Al Eyaf emphasized the event’s goal of supporting the critique movement in conjunction with the growing production, exhibition, and distribution of Saudi, Arab, and international films in the Kingdom.

Grateful for the continuous support from cultural leaders such as Minister of Culture Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al Saud, Al Eyaf highlighted their dedication to enhancing the Kingdom’s cultural presence globally.

The conference will feature diverse discussions and presentations, including talks by director Yousry Nasrallah on the relationship between filmmaking and film criticism, and live on-stage dialogues with notable figures in film criticism and filmmaking, such as Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho.

Additionally, the program will include a presentation by Professor of English literature Dr. Saad al-Bazai, focusing on the critical approach to the connection between cinema and storytelling, along with a professional course on film criticism as a career by Indian film critic Shubhra Gupta.

Simultaneously, an art exhibition offering interactive experiences and workshops will run alongside the conference, accompanied by the screening of various international films. The conference agenda will examine the fundamental aspects of film criticism, exploring the implicit connotations and artistic references embedded within cinema, often unnoticed by the camera lens.

Directors from diverse backgrounds will lead discussions on ten selected films, analyzing their rich content and highlighting the various expressions of arts and culture within the realm of cinema.

This event is a collaborative effort with the Diplomatic Quarter of The Royal Commission for Riyadh City and has received media support from Sollywood, a leading news platform dedicated to the world of cinema.
