The International Prize for Arabic Fiction announced its seventeenth edition’s shortlist in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Yasser Suleiman, revealing the nominees, said the winner will be announced in April.

He thanked the Saudi Arabian Literature, Publishing, and Translation Authority and Dr. Mohammed Hassan Alwan. Suleiman highlighted that three Saudis – Abdo Khal, Rajaa Alim, and Mohammed Hassan Alwan – have previously won. Many novels have been nominated since 2007, and critics like Dr. Saad Al Bazie and Professor Fouzia Abu Khalid have judged.

Dr. Suleiman emphasized Arab readers’ significant impact, noting novels gain editions as they advance.

Flor Montanaro expressed gratitude for Riyadh’s hosting of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction. She was pleased to recognize Saudi finalists, including winners Khal, Alim, and Alwan.

She also named nominees like Aziz Mohammed and Abdullah bin Bakhit, praising judges Saad Al Bazie and Fouzia Abu Khalid.

The shortlist includes works like “Gambling on the Honour of Lady Mitzi” and “Seventh Heaven’s Sky.” The winner will be unveiled in Abu Dhabi on April 28, 2024.

Flor Montanaro thanked Riyadh for hosting the event and highlighted the significance of Saudi finalists. She also commended judges Saad Al Bazie and Fouzia Abu Khalid for their contributions.

Montanaro mentioned additional nominees like Aziz Mohammed and Abdullah bin Bakhit. She expressed gratitude for their participation and praised the judging panel’s expertise.

Overall, the event marked another milestone for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction, underscoring its importance in promoting Arab literature globally.
