The King Abdulaziz International Cultural Center (Ithra) in Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt and the National Library in Morocco, launches the third edition of the Iqraa Marathon, the largest qualitative reading marathon across three Arab cities: Dhahran, Alexandria, and Rabat, from February 29 to March 2.

The Iqraa Marathon aims to motivate the Arab community to read in public libraries, believing in the library’s role in enriching scientific, cultural, and civilizational life. Reading is one of the most important means of enriching knowledge for future generations, aspiring to inspire a million readers by 2030.

Environmental Impact and Achievements of the “Read” Marathon

It also aims to raise environmental awareness by planting trees in collaboration with the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development to combat desertification in Saudi Arabia, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation in Egypt. A tree is planted for every 100 pages read until the Readathon’s goal of reaching 500,000 pages read this year is achieved, contributing to the planting of 5,000 trees. Additionally, readers will receive a commemorative medal associated with the event, with medals divided into four categories: bronze for reading 100 pages, silver for 200 pages, gold for 500 pages, and platinum for 1000 pages.

It is noteworthy that the marathon was held in its first edition inside the Ithra library, achieving a reading of 162,000 pages and planting 1,622 trees. The second edition took place at the Ithra library in Dhahran and two libraries in Riyadh and Tabuk, achieving a reading of 422,000 pages and planting 4,223 trees. Additionally, Ithra Center, in collaboration with the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Desertification Control, concluded planting more than 5,000 seedlings last October, a result of the pages read in the first two editions. The planting took place in Al-Ahsa National Park in Saudi Arabia, with participation from several readers involved in the marathon.
