Bears Factor Bridges the Literary Gap to the Other

Literary agencies play a crucial role in fostering and advancing literature and culture in Arab countries. They represent authors and writers to publishers, and cultural and literary institutions, work to market their books and literary works, and encourage translation by securing and selling rights. This contributes to cultural exchange and global engagement. Although literary agencies are a relatively recent phenomenon in this region, they are already having an impact on the overall development of Arab literature and culture. Take, for example, Bears Factor agency, which is based in the United Arab Emirates. This handles everything related to literary matters in the Arab market. It exclusively represents a diverse group of publishers, foreign literary agencies, talented writers, translators and content creators from around the world.

The agency’s work is divided into two parts. The first involves representing a number of publishers and literary agencies, as well as several foreign authors. It handles the rights for translating their works into Arabic. When an Arab publisher needs the rights to a particular book, they reach out to the agency to acquire what they are looking for, which simplifies things for them. This is significant because, in the past, many Arab publishers complained about the difficulty of access and communication, and the lack of response to messages from rights holders abroad.

The challenges don’t stop there. Bassem El-Kheshen, the agency director, explains that when an Arab publisher requests rights, an initial agreement is often reached, advance payments are made and contracts are signed. However, it is not uncommon for a publisher to disappear and fail to maintain communication. This leaves the copyright holders confused, unaware of the book’s fate – whether it has been printed or not – and ignorant of sales figures or remaining rights.
