Celebrating World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, In a world where images and sounds transcend boundaries, the tapestry of human existence is woven together through audiovisual archives. These treasures encapsulate the essence of cultures, the rhythm of lives, and the echoes of history from every corner of the globe. They are a testament to our shared memory, a boundless source of wisdom, and a reflection of the extraordinary diversity that defines our communities.

Preserving this heritage and making it accessible to both the present and the generations yet to come is not just a duty of memory institutions, but a collective mission that resonates with the global public. The UNESCO Archives has taken up this mantle with its visionary project, “Digitizing our shared UNESCO history,” with the ultimate goal of safeguarding these invaluable records.

World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (WDAH): A Day of Reflection

The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, born from the Recommendation for the Safeguarding and Preservation of Moving Images adopted in 1980, is a call to action that resounds globally. It’s a day for us to recognize the urgency of protecting audiovisual documents and to acknowledge their paramount significance.

Furthermore, WDAH offers UNESCO’s Member States an opportunity to gauge their commitment to implementing the 2015 Recommendation Concerning the Preservation of, and Access to, Documentary Heritage, Including in Digital Form. It’s a day for self-assessment, where countries measure their efforts in preserving our shared documentary heritage.

WDAH 2023: “Your Window to the World”

This year, on October 27th, 2023, we invite you to celebrate the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage under the inspiring theme “Your Window to the World.” This annual commemoration is a collaborative effort by UNESCO and the Coordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations (CCAAA), with a mission to honor the professionals and institutions dedicated to preserving our global heritage.

As a window to the world, audiovisual heritage allows us to transcend time and space. It enables us to witness historical events, listen to the voices of generations past, and create narratives that educate and entertain. Through the power of recorded sounds and visual imagery, we not only gain a profound appreciation for the world’s cultural richness, but we also draw essential lessons from it.

So, mark your calendars and join us in celebrating the vibrant world of audiovisual heritage on October 27th. Together, let’s continue to unlock the stories that connect us across borders, preserving our collective memory for generations to come.
